[squeak-dev] Cuis on mobile devices

David Zmick
I was thinking about potential useful applications for Cuis, and the thought that it would be "ideal" for mobile devices due to its low system requirements and small size.  I just wanted to get that thought out her and see what you guys say about it :)

It should be great for that.

I have an HTC Dual Touch. I can do some tests If somebody needs it.

I'm open to do it.

Hello,
I put it on my nokia 770 and it runs fine and looks good.
As I cannot do any textinput, because this device only have an
onscreen keyboad which is launched when you select
a textinput widget, it is of little use.
Is there something like a virtual keyboard within squeak?

Does cut-n-paste work? Then you can type a text in any native text entry field
and then copy-n-paste it into Squeak.

Since you say that you started from Squeak3.7: would you expect that Cuis works
on an embedded system with powerpc/linux and a Squeak-3.7-7.powerpc-linux-gnu-VM?
I use a Squeak3.7-5989-basic.image right now and went through the
Smalltalk>>majorShrink thing. I would be happy to give Cuis a try.

Yes cut and paste works, but of course, it isnt very useful. Another point is,
with the touchscreen as pointer device I have only one mousebutton.

By the way, how does the iPhone port handles textinput?

You need to instantiate and show a single or multi-line UIKit text
instance.  When the user taps
in that he gets the keyboard up for typing.  After he completes the
data entry and signals to the user
he is done you take the NSString instance from the widget and stick
back into the squeak image.

For example see.

http://www.mobilewikiserver.com/Wiki_Edit_Page.html

There is no interface in the Squeak VM iPhone app for doing this,
there is a test case in the Sunits that
someone could adopt if they want to purse on device editing. But
usually you use the VNC server logic
to interact with the image via a desktop computer.

Some of the complexity is that if you don't want "return" to signal
completion of the entry, then you must
add a toolbar, non-trival, to let the user say he is done or to cancel
the edit.
