It looks a lot, but some just contributed a few tests that we can remove, some just dead code we can remove, some just contributed games enhancements we can remove, and some are one-liners that no way can be significant. Now only a few dozens of methods that are involved, and we might just rewrite. I was told that there was previous conversation with Joseph and he actually replied to say "he has never contributed to Squeak". That is true in a sense that he didn't publish it for Squeak, but it is in the image. Joseph, if you don't mind, could you also agree to make it public under the MIT license, and just a gesture could you sign: http://netjam.org/squeak/SqueakDistributionAgreement.pdf and send it via a physical letter or FAX or scanned PDF to Viewpoints or me? It somehow doesn't matter whether the intended license was SqL or not... At least the signed document would make it clear. Thank you very much! |

By the way if anyone wants to get in on the missing initials via method
submission hunt the code I'm using to map author initials to methods can be found at http://paste.lisp.org/display/65675 this is shamelessly adapted from a SystemNavigation method. Ken signature.asc (196 bytes) Download Attachment |

Jecel has email going back that far and is in the process of looking through it, he or I will follow up if anything is found. > 'abc' '?' There is some thought that this one is going to be a problem because it was used in some cases where for some reason the initials were entered like this because it wasn't thought to be relevant but then the same image was used later to produce a fix without updating the initials. However against that theory is the fact that all of the methods with these initials are in the Monticello packages, but they span a period of about 4 1/2 years. This may turn out to be Keith Hodges, we are trying to figure it out. But there is also a possiblity that Alexandre Bergel used these at least a time or two. From early 1999 to at least 2004 Dan Ingalls sent many reports to this list about what changes had been included in the official image. The first line had the name of the change set (starting with a number), the name of the author and the date. Almost always the last part of the change set's name was the author initials, so I generated the following report:
http://paste.lisp.org/display/65680 I started by extracting the first line of each change from the emails and then cleaned that up. Based on the numbering not all changes made it to my list. This file itself might be interesting to some people so it might be a good idea to upload it to the wiki. The next step was extracting the second and fourth element (separated by "-") in each line. Some change sets have no second part while others have multiple initials. I manually removed most of the resulting noise but left duplication where the same name was spelled a bit differently or the initials appeared as both lower case and upper case. This makes me think that 'md\' is probably Marcus Denker. My list didn't help with any of the other initials. -- Jecel |

If something goes really wrong in a test run sometimes the correct initials don't get restored. That's probably why it appeared in Keith's work, and I know it's caused some methods that I wrote to appear with 'abc' in the timestamp. Colin |

I have a kind of 101 type question. Does this list of initials take
into account every possible contributor of every possible method version that was ever distributed in any 'core' Squeak release? What about the case where a method had multiple versions and then was refactored or renamed and the old method deleted? At the moment I'm unable to find many of the undefined initials in 3.10.2, but then I'm only looking at current versions. Oh, and let me add that it is my understanding, and please correct me if
I'm wrong, that even between the times that sources were condensed and new .sources files were issued, the changes themselves were condensed and the version history was pruned within the changes file itself. My point being that I'm not aware of any single file, or relatively small number of files that truly represents all contributors. In fact I doubt any such thing exists even if you took into account all the .sources files and all the .changes files that were ever released because at some point and time a condensation was done during a release, I strongly suspect. (except some packages like Connectors that weren't brought in to the image as changesets). For the Etoys part, I have an image that holds all of these changes in a dictionary of dictionary (170MB of image) and I can browse all of them in Browser/VersionBrowser like tools. -- Yoshiki |
