[squeak-dev] Squeak soundless on Ubuntu. Who will fix it?

Jerome Peace

Hi Chris,

That sounds like the problem.

So is there someone in the community willing to take responsibility for getting this fixed in the distribution? Please?

Yours in curiosity and service, --Jerome Peace

Hi Jerome,

Maybe related to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/squeak-vm/+bug/235146

Look to see if have the vm-sound-ALSA plugin.

Note btw that this issue goes away in Ubuntu releases after 8.04 I believe.

It would be great indeed if someone who actually knows Squeak would
help in the VM packaging efforts for the various Linux distributions.
The packages  are mostly outdated, not built correctly, missing
plugins etc. - though I'm still grateful for the volunteer packagers'
work done so far. They're Squeak's ambassadors to the larger open-
source community and need our support.

I'm here to help and give advice (both as Linux VM hacker and the
Board's new VM team advisor) but I can't actually spend the time
maintaining a distro package myself (I did so for the OLPC distro but
it is switching to plain Fedora now). If you want to help please
contact me.

I am using Ubuntu 8.04, sound does not work in squeak does work in etoys.
Unless someone says they know first hand otherwise, we have to accept that this is our problem not Ubuntu's.

I am a bug repairer and developer. It is important to me that this blocking level problem be fix not only for me but for everyone who installs the squeak distribution on Ubuntu. Ubuntu is the most widely distributed Linux. It represents a chance to reach many in the free software community. The ones most capable of aiding the squeak community in the long run. It should not be stuck with a crippled distribution.

The problem is solved for etoys so their should be a way to apply that cure to squeak.

So I am asking again. Is there someone willing to take responsibility for solving this problem for the squeak org distibution?
Bert has offered his expertise and  support.
So will someone come forward and take the primary role? Please?

Hi Jerome,

It's a packaging issue.  Unlike etoys, squeak-vm for Ubuntu is just not
packaged with sound.  They look for the sound plugin in different places.
If both used the same file hierarchy, sound would have worked in Squeak.

Ubuntu's packages are generated from the Debian repository.  The Debian
packages can be installed on any Debian based distro.

Debian now has a squeak-vm package that looks like the real deal (see
below for file list).  The package page points to squeak.org to download
image and sources files.

http://packages.debian.org/lenny/squeak-vm

The proper fix is for Ubuntu to Ubuntu-ize the new Debian squeak-vm.
That way it is easily available to Ubuntu users through Synaptic.
Anyone know how to motivate the Ubuntu packagers?

An alternative is to test the Debian package and provide instructions
for Debian based users.

Debian's squeak-vm package includes:

/usr/bin/squeak
/usr/bin/squeakvm
/usr/bin/xresetcapslock
/usr/lib/mime/packages/squeak
