squeak.org

I made a few changes. I added Darius's Innovation section and some color
to the sections that were gray.

I think Darius's Innovation section fills out the site nicely. There are
no links, because the content area is a child of the parent frame
holding the navbar. This is composition, not inheritance, so I can't
reach the "current" instvar easily. Altitude can be RESTful, so I could
make the whole site RESTful. And if it was Seaside, I'd punt and call a
continuation. The site may need to be re-structured, but for now I'm
just going to present the Innovation section without links.

If you have tool that can do it, I'd suggest trying to set the colour to the average of the rice paper pattern. It might make things flow nicely, maybe, perhaps. There's probably some single-click tool in photowotsit to derive an average of the colour in an area.

The main banner text seems a bit off to me; what do people think about -

Welcome To Squeak
Squeak is a modern, open source, full-featured implementation of the powerful Smalltalk programming language and environment. Squeak is highly-portable, running on almost any platform you could name and you can really truly write once run anywhere. Squeak is the vehicle for a wide range of projects from multimedia applications and educational platforms to commercial web application development. Read on and join in!

My minor problem is that it isn't really true about the virtual machine (there is a lot that needs to be written for each platform) and anyway why would anyone taking a peek even know what a VM is? There's probably less than 100 people on the planet that really care about VMs.

Is that 'menubar' as in the black bar at the top? If so, perhaps the links can go there and the text could read -

Take Part In The Innovation; use the menus at the top of the window to -
        • Discover Squeak projects
        • Get Squeak by downloading it to your computer
        • Explore the documentation
        • Build using developer links <<< somehow doesn't scan right; do you mean build your own software by, or what?
        • Join the community to find common interests
        • Stay current reading the latest news from The Weekly Squeak.

I found the color and made the change. I'll upload a new image tomorrow.

I changed it to "Find tools via the developer links".

Darius Clarke
I'm not seeing the website. It might be down.

I'm glad you found my suggestions helpful.

And thank you, thank you for your work.

Grrr. It's the school district where I'm at blocking "strange ports".
[sigh]

I'll check it out from home.
