ok. I'm using the latest ATI driver I downloaded for my card (Radeon 4650) from AMD. Will look into the tool you mentioned...

Are you using 32 bit Ubuntu or 64 bit Ubuntu?

64 bit

If on 64 bit Ubuntu, check with the manufacturer for 64 bit drivers for your card.
