I would like to suggest that the community get used to using
http://wiki.squeak.org/ in preference to our usual http://minnow.cc.gatech.edu/squeak/ . As has been correctly pointed out there is a long history in the search engines of minnow URLs and while it would be nice for those to continue to work in the long run, I don't think it is realistic that GA. Tech is going to want their hostname used on a server which they do not host or maintain. I think we simply need to face the reality that at some point we are going to lose that URL. To that end I suggest that we immediately begin using http://wiki.squeak.org/ in every case. I have it setup so that URLs like http://wiki.squeak.org/5888 are correctly redirected for now and once the Swiki is moved hopefully the same URLs will work later. Hopefully if we start using these URLs sooner than later the search engines will begin picking them up even before the use is necessary. Realistically we are going to have trouble with search engines for a long time to come, but it can only help to get started now. Ken signature.asc (196 bytes) Download Attachment |
By the way you can give an hint to google.
When accessing to http://minnow.cc.gatech.edu/squeak/ you can reply with a special http reply"Moved" to redirect it to http://wiki.squeak.org/ The search engine will update itself in a snap. +1, great idea Ken. When we can get minnow's server to redirect the old
urls, this would be a done deal. Do you know who could arrange that ? |

That's a very good idea but not something I can implement since it must
be done on minnow once the Swiki is shut down. Jochen, Mark: What Giovanni is getting at here is whether it is possible for minnow to report a 301 (Permanently Moved) reply pointing to http://wiki.squeak.org/ at least for http://minnow.cc.gatech.edu/squeak/ once the content has been moved? By the way, is the intention to move just the /squeak/ section of the Swiki or the entire content?
