Hello Squeakland community,
I'm hoping someone out there can give me a definitive answer on trying to use Etoys on a Chromebook. My initial assumption and experience has been that it is not going to work, at least at this time, but I am trying to confirm that one way or the other. Etoys-to-Go hasn't gotten me anywhere -- anything I try to run just tells me that the file type is not supported. It seems the most viable solution would be a Google Chrome extension... is that a possibility or completely outside the scope of the Etoys project?
Thanks in advance for any guidance! --Michael-- ============== Michael McKelvey ============== Office for Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana MSTE website: http://mste.illinois.edu {Office #: <a href="tel:217-244-7148" value="+12172447148" target="_blank">217-244-7148} {Cell #: <a href="tel:217-621-5783" value="+12176215783" target="_blank">217-621-5783} =========== [hidden email] =========== Current diversion: Scott Pilgrim (http://scottpilgrimthemovie.com/) _______________________________________________ squeakland mailing list [hidden email] http://lists.squeakland.org/mailman/listinfo/squeakland |
Hello Michael
I remember that Yoshiki Ohshima wrote a VM for Google Native Client. http://forum.world.st/Squeak-VM-port-to-Google-Native-Client-td3494618.html I'm not sure it directly runs on Chromebook or not. However I guess it might be a starting point for it. You might be right. I took a quick look at the Chrome developer docs this morning, and there seem to be all kinds of restrictions preventing someone packaging a 100 MB application to run on the Chromebook. Some kind of Javascript wrapper and VM as Kazuhiro Abe suggested might be the only way - apart from jailbreaking your device. While it is not in scope at the moment - open platforms such as Windows Mac and Linux, including the OLPC, are the main targets - I wouldn't say it as impossible. A lot of the underlying infrastructure has already been ported to Javascript by Jens Moenig and Brian Harvey's SNAP! project at Berkeley, so with the right volunteers or funding, an 'Etoys-lite' for the web might not be very far away. I haven't run SNAP! myself lately, so I can only guess that the full multimedia potential of Etoys, or compatibility with existing materials, might be a lot further away. Anyway, I am just another Squeaker - not a spokesperson for anyone else. Have fun! David. _______________________________________________ squeakland mailing list [hidden email] http://lists.squeakland.org/mailman/listinfo/squeakland |

Etoys is designed to run mostly standalone (big image on local disk) while Chromebook is designed to work like an Internet terminal. While it may be possible to squeeze Etoys into this model with some brain surgery, I don't see it as viable in the long term compared something like Lively Kernel on Chromebook. Regards ..
