Help a noob install Squeak5.1-16548 for Linux

eric
I've downloaded Squeak5.1-16548-32bit-201608171728-Linux.zip and extracted it into a directory off of my home directory.  When I start a term, change into that directory, and type "./squeak.sh shared/Squeak5.1-16548-32bit.image" I receive the error message:

Using /home/eric/squeak51/Squeak5.1-16548-32bit-201608171728-Linux/bin/squeak...
could not find display driver vm-display-X11; either:
  - check that /home/eric/squeak51/Squeak5.1-16548-32bit-201608171728-Linux/bin//vm-display-X11.so exists, or
  - use the '-plugins <path>' option to tell me where it is, or
  - remove DISPLAY from your environment.
Aborted (core dumped)

The bin directory has a file named vm-display-X11 without an extension.  Using the "file" command on it shows that it is a shared library, so I renamed the file to vm-display-X11.so but still get the same error message.
